Methods for Calculating Body Fat Percentage

The US Navy Approach

This approach uses specific body measurements to calculate body fat:

  • Men: Measure waist circumference at the level of the belly button and neck circumference below the larynx.
  • Women: Measure waist circumference at the narrowest point, neck circumference below the larynx, and hip circumference.

After obtaining these measurements, our body fat calculator applies the following equations to arrive at the result:

Men (US Customary System – USC):

BFP = 86.010 × log10(waist – neck) – 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76

Men (International System of Units – SI):

BFP =
495 / (1.0324 – 0.19077 × log10(waist – neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) – 450

Women (US Customary System – USC):

BFP = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip – neck) – 97.684 × log10(height) – 78.387

Women (International System of Units – SI):

BFP =
495 / (1.29579 – 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip – neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) – 450

Equations for Fat Mass and Lean Mass:

Fat Mass (FM):
FM = Body Fat Percentage × Body Weight

Lean Mass (LM):
LM = Body Weight – Fat Mass

Using BMI to Calculate Body Fat Percentage:

BMI can also be used to calculate body fat. The formulas vary according to age and sex:

Adult Men:

  • BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age – 16.2

Adult Women:

  • BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age – 5.4

Boys:

  • BFP = 1.51 × BMI – 0.70 × age – 2.2

Girls:

  • BFP = 1.51 × BMI – 0.70 × age + 1.4

These equations are estimates, and for a more accurate analysis, methods such as bioimpedance or densitometry are recommended.

Benefits of Monitoring Body Fat Percentage

Monitoring body fat percentage offers several benefits, including:

  • Progress Tracking: Helps monitor the results of exercise programs and diet.
  • Workout Customization: Allows adjusting workouts to achieve specific body composition goals.
  • Disease Prevention: Maintaining a healthy body fat level reduces the risk of various chronic diseases.
